Jotform combines a visual form builder with tools for payments, documents and workflows. Forminit focuses on the [backend for forms you build yourself](/docs/why-forminit/). If your website or app already has the interface, connect it directly instead of recreating that experience in a form editor.
## Custom website contact forms, without a builder workflow
Start with your site's HTML, CSS and design system. Your contact form can use service cards, a custom date picker, inline validation, animated steps or an AI-generated layout. Keep the same typography, components and mobile behavior as the rest of your website.
Custom logic stays in your application. Check service availability through your backend, show questions based on a customer's account or calculate a quote from current product data. Submit the finished response to Forminit when your application is ready.
Jotform offers source-code export for Classic forms, which requires manually refreshing the exported code after builder changes. With Forminit, your own components are the starting point: there is no generated form markup to keep in sync with a builder.

Forminit accepts submissions at `POST https://forminit.com/f/{formId}`. Connect plain HTML, the [framework-agnostic SDK](/docs/sdk/) or your backend. For account-aware workflows, your backend checks permissions, adds trusted values and submits using a private key. Your code handles business rules; Forminit supplies the submission infrastructure.

## Migrating from Jotform
Start with one form and the workflow around it:
1. Keep your existing custom frontend, or rebuild the Jotform embed using your own components. Map the answers and application context to supported Forminit Form Blocks.
2. Connect the [HTML endpoint](/docs/html/), [SDK](/docs/sdk/) or [submission API](/docs/submit-form-api/). If you already use Jotform's API, update both the endpoint and payload mapping; Jotform question IDs are not Forminit field names.
3. Recreate notifications, spam protection and integrations. Test conditional paths, validation failures, file uploads and successful delivery before switching traffic.
Use Jotform's export options to save historical submissions and attachments. Those records do not transfer automatically. If your current flow includes payments, signed documents or approvals, plan those integrations separately; Forminit is the submission backend for your replacement interface.
## FAQ
### Does Jotform have an API to create submissions?
Yes. Jotform documents POST /form/{id}/submissions, using an API key and answers mapped to existing question IDs. Forminit provides a dedicated submission endpoint for your own interface, using named, typed Form Blocks. The difference is the integration model, not whether Jotform has an API.
### Can I add a user ID, order ID or other application data?
Yes. Send supported Form Block values such as user_id, organization_id, order_id, plan or product_id alongside the response. For trusted values, have your backend check the session and permissions, derive the data from your application and forward it to Forminit. Keep private API keys on the server.
### Can I keep my existing form design when switching?
Yes, if the interface already belongs to your application: keep the components and replace the submission integration. If you use a Jotform embed, build the replacement interface in your own frontend. Map the fields, recreate notifications and integrations, and test before switching traffic. Existing submissions and files do not transfer automatically.
